DIY Shelf Decor

Are you looking for a fun way to jazz up some shelves or to create a really beautiful feature wall in your home? I’ve got you covered!

I’ve always loved shelf decor — you know, the kind you see displayed in a store. But I never knew how quite to pull it all together. I mean, are sheleves functional or are they meant to look like art?

Well, I studied a lot of shelf decor to figure it out — and the answer is, the best shelf decor is just that… decor. It’s meant to look good, and not necessarily be used. I mean you can use it, but then it gets messy.

So when you’re putting together a feature wall and / or shelves, make sure you remember that!

My tips and tricks for creating beautiful + budget friendly shelf decor:

  1. Do your research — look on Pinterest, in magazines and go to stores to see how they pull things together. There is nothing wrong with stealing the whole look

  2. Think about your room decor — your shelf decor should accent the existing colours and styles from the room

  3. Find unique stuff — the best way to make your shelf decor unique is by finding really cool one of a kind stuff (more on this below)

  4. Use decor with various sizes, shapes and colours — it makes your shelf way more interesting when there are different types of things to look at

  5. Layer — use the forefront and background, as well as items with different heights to give dimension

  6. Avoid clutter — don’t over do it, less is always more

Where to buy one of a kind stuff:

  1. Etsy — there are so many cool artisans and makers on Etsy selling really cool one of a kind things

  2. Second-hand stores — pop by Goodwill or your local consignment store to find that really cool, unique thing

  3. In your basement — there’s nothing wrong with bringing something back to life

  4. Family heirlooms — there are so many cool things you can add that have been passed down through the years

  5. DIY — make some things from scratch

  6. Homesense — when in doubt, you can never go wrong with a trip to Homesense and don’t forget to shop their clearance section

For Chet’s room, I wanted to create a one-of-a-kind feature wall using shelves, and I looked forever to pull together all the right pieces. It takes effort and thought, but when you get it right — you can really enjoy it!
