Local Fun

You have to try this in your neighbourhood!

The next time you’re having a lazy afternoon or looking for something fun to do, try one of these five family friendly ideas right in your own neighbourhood. You don’t even have to leave!

When John and I moved from downtown to just outside Toronto, I told him that I wanted to keep my lifestyle of being able to walk places and feeling like I’m part of a community. I am a huge believer — in case you didn’t know this already — of shopping, supporting and staying LOCAL.

I mean, is there anything better?

Here are my top 5 family friendly activities to do in your own neighbourhood:

  1. The Pool - the local, city pool is a total hidden gem. I say hidden because every time we go to our local, city pool it is completely empty which is perfect for us. It only cost about $5 per person, and if you get bored with the one near your house, you can travel to the one in the next neighbourhood. And some of the local, city pools have all sorts of fun stuff like slides, eating areas, splash pads, you name it.

  2. Live Music - in our neighbourhood, our local BIA puts on a music night down by the lake with some really fun bands and plenty of room to watch from. You can take the whole family and bring chairs, food, drinks and blankets. And it’s totally free. Short of that, there is often live music at our local Legion and a few restaurants. You just have to ask around, and explore!

  3. Bakery - we have several Ma & Pop shops in our neighbourhood, but our favourites are our local ice cream joint and bakery. Every time we go, it feels special. We usually buy a treat and then find a place outside to sit and enjoy it.

  4. Nature Walk - we are lucky to have to the lake near us, and let me tell you going for our “lake walk” feels like an outing in itself. And of course, you always come back feeling relaxed and refreshed. Though, if we didn’t have the lake, I would look for paths or even quiet streets with lots of trees to walk along. The best part of going for walks is you never know who you are going to run into.

  5. SHOP - when in doubt or if you’re looking for retail therapy, just hit the shops! There are so many cute small businesses nearby with things in them that you just can’t find in box stores. You will appreciate the shops, just as much as the owners will appreciate you.

Staying in your community, getting to know the people in your community and supporting your community is the best feeling. It hits the spot and then some!
