Music + Creativity

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE music.  It’s a major part of our household, and I really couldn’t imagine life without it.

In addition to our love for music, we also LOVE creativity (but you probably already knew that).

And now, there has been new research that suggests music and creativity go hand in hand. A match made in heaven, if I may say so.

“One new study explores music as a source of creativity. Since music has been shown to improve cognition and enhance learning and memory in other studies, it makes sense that perhaps it has an impact on creative thinking, too,” Greater Good Magazine, Berkeley.

When you listen to music, your creative mind opens!

“The key is the music needs to have a strong emotional impact and a catchy beat. It is best to listen to your favorite music or songs without lyrics. We all have our happy songs that boost our mood. Scientists now believe that the happy mood accelerates increased creativity,” The Garage Group.

So why would you want to use music to increase your creativity? Because so much comes from creativity, including art, innovation, scientific discovery, emotional empathy, the list goes on.

Here are 3 easy ways to use music at home to boost creativity:

  1. Learn about music and musicians - we love listening to all different kinds of music in our house, and now our kids do too. We listen in the car, we listen on Spotify and we watch videos on YouTube. My kids are familiar with music like pop, rock, punk, and even techno and artists like Depeche Mode, Elvis, The Ramones, Billy Idol, the list goes on. Learning about music and musicians opens their minds with learning and inspiration.

  2. Sing with your kids and family - we are not great singers by any means, but we like to sing together. Sometimes I’ll sing with the kids to distract them to get them to do something, and sometimes I’ll sing with them to make a boring chore fun. The trick is to get them singing too, and you’ll be surprised the things you get done and the fun you have.

  3. Listen while doing other things - we have a little portable speaker that we connect to Spotify and then can bring it everywhere. We love to pop on our favourite music and do things like play, art, work in the garden, clean. It’s amazing the way it relaxes you, opens your mind and lets you breathe in all sorts of new ideas with whatever you are doing.
