My Creative Process

With the upcoming release of my new children’s book Stuck Like Glue, I thought I would take a minute to tell you about my creative process.

If you know my first two books, you might recall me sharing that I tend to come up with ideas and write while in transit. My first book I wrote on the street car in downtown Toronto while going to and from work, and my second book was written on a plane.

Well, this book is no different. I came up with the idea for Stuck Like Glue while walking through the streets of downtown Toronto.

For me, walking is the most cathartic experience and it jumpstarts creativity. I often find I get the best ideas while walking, but then have to stop to write them down. Don’t forget to write them down!

At the time, I was thinking about BIG emotions. I was reflecting on the way every person experiences emotions differently, and that while they can be so incredibly beautiful, they can also get you into trouble.

As I was thinking about this, I walked past an old vintage poster of a pinball machine. So naturally, my mind started thinking about pinballs and pinball machines. I remembered growing up with pinball machines in arcades, and how cool and magical I always thought they were. It made me think of the movie Big, and the magic when things come alive.

I also thought about the cute little pinballs travelling through the machine, and how all those bumps and pings must really hurt - and how this was so much like life. It’s like we’re all travelling through, getting bumped and pinged, and those bumps and pings can really hurt.

And so, all these pieces started connecting in my mind, and a magical world emerged for my next children’s book, Stuck Like Glue.

Stay tuned for my next posts on what the story is about, my illustration journey and upcoming release date.
