Teaching Kids Music

You may already know this, but I am a HUGE advocate for teaching CREATIVITY at HOME — and I would say MUSIC is right up there as one of the best ways to do it. I truly believe music is great for kids, and it is a lot easier than you would ever think to get your kids learning music from a young age.

Find out why music is great for kids, and a few fun and easy ways to teach kids music at home.

WHY MUSIC IS GREAT FOR KIDS

— music is a great emotional outlet for kids, providing a safe and positive place for self-expression and creativity

— it is a fun and easy way to help children develop confidence and self-esteem, becoming a positive factor in mental health

— music aids in children’s brain development, accelerating learning, coordination, memory, fine motor, reading, language

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS LEARNING MUSIC FROM A YOUNG AGE

  1. Listen to music together — whether it’s in the car or at home, put on music for your kids to listen to, sing with and learn about. Anything from the Disney soundtrack to Frozen to Beyonce and Bob Dylan. Get your kids learning about it all!

  2. Watch YouTube music videos — kids are extremely visual, so seeing a band play live, watching a singer belt it out or having fun with a musical number in a movie can make music fun and REAL for little kids who are just learning about it.

  3. Have a family dance party — when your kids watch you enjoying music and see you dancing, they will get excited about it too and understand how to get into music with dancing and singing.

  4. Let your kids “perform” a song — even if it’s Itsy Bitsy Spider, setting up a little space (and calling it a “stage”) for your kids to perform with the entire family watching helps them build creativity and confidence with music

  5. Talk about musicians — a great thing to do is pull up pictures of different musicians and talk to your kids a little bit about them, and then show a music video or listen to a song by them and talk about what they do (songwriter, play an instrument, singer)

  6. Read books on music/musicians — an excellent series for little kids is the Little People series. It features all sorts of legendary people, including musicians, and this is a great way for kids to learn about music.

  7. Sing a song together — sometimes you just have to get into it with kids, and learn a song to sing together. Sing it with the song playing in the background, or just on its own — but don’t hold back, get into the full spirit of the song with them.

  8. Take music lessons — your children can take anything from paid 1:1 or group lessons in your community or attend free sing-a-long classes at the library right from a young age.

  9. Attend a live music show — head out to your local place to watch a local group play, or go to the local theatre to see a bigger group perform.

We love MUSIC in our house, and we did pretty much all the things on the list with both our kids right from a young age.

I am musically illiterate, and WISH I knew how to play an instrument. But one thing I can do, is give the gift of music to my kids so they can have it as an outlet for their entire lives.

Are you into music?
