Kids Craft: Thanksgiving Greeting Card

Are you looking for a fun and easy Thanksgiving gift idea? Try making this Thanksgiving greeting card and kids craft. You’ll love making it just as much as someone special will love receiving it.

It’s a true keepsake because it has your child’s handprint on it, and a cute ‘Handmade By’ stamp on the back with your child’s name and date.

The card embraces the best of the season with the warm tones and colours of Fall, the brown Kraft card stock and the words ‘Thankful’ capturing the spirit.

Make it truly yours with a beautiful caption inside, just for the recipient.

MAKING HOMEMADE CARDS

One of the things I discovered about making homemade greeting cards look like they came straight from the Hallmark store is investing in good supplies for making them. I’m specifically referring to cardstock and stamps — more on this below.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

To make this cute Thanksgiving greeting card and kids craft, you will need:

  • cardstock — preferably Kraft or white, and 8.5” x 11” in size to fit a standard envelope (you can trim the sides if it’s a little too big or use a different size for the paper). Michael’s has a great selection for high-quality cardstock, and you can buy colours like Kraft, white and black in bulk. I have also bought high-quality Kraft cardstock from the Dollar Store.

  • acrylic paint — yellow, orange and brown (note: do not use the washable version as, for me, it was washed out or watercolour for that matter, the best paint for is handprints is acrylic)

  • paint brushes — you want a brush size that is about .5 - 1.5 cm in size so that it’s not too big or too small for painting your child’s hand

  • stamp — you can buy stamps from Micheals, including this set which includes the words thankful, blessed and grateful — and this set, which is handmade by. You’ll also need the ink pad that goes along with it. A high-quality stamp takes your card from ordinary to extraordinary. That and your TLC!

  • scissors — in case you want to trim the cardstock to a certain size

INSTRUCTIONS

  • fold card stock in half, then press firmly along fold to flatten smoothly

  • set up your paint station — use a palette to lay out your three colours

  • hold your child’s hand (or they can do this if they are old enough) and paint generously on the palm and thumb brown, and alternate the yellow and orange for the other fingers

  • place your child’s hand (paint side down) on the front centre of the card, push down and hold for about 5 seconds. This part is important — do not roll the hand. When you are finished, you want to pull the hand straight up to avoid smudges and smears

  • take your ‘thankful’ stamp, push it in the ink, then place it under or above the handprint. Place a second ‘thankful’ stamp inside, about two-thirds the way up

  • take your ‘handmade by’ stamp, and place it at the bottom of the back of the card. Then write your child’s name in the box with the date

Once the card is finished, have your child write a special note inside of it. Then give it to that special person with some delicious homemade treats.

You will love making this Thanksgiving greeting card and kids craft just as much as your loved one will enjoy receiving it.
