Healthy Snacks Challenge

Alright, friends — big things are happening! We’re slowly working our way through all our favourite snacks by making them healthy, delicious and easy for you to try at home. I thought I would take a side step to tell you more about the challenge and encourage you to do it, too.

I started the Healthy Snacks Challenge because I wanted to:

  • introduce healthy eating habits to my kids and family

  • educate myself on how to make healthy snacks

  • learn new healthy recipes like the back of my hand

  • reduce snacks with sugar, preservatives and artificial ingredients

  • share my love for healthy eating with other parents

  • show that making healthy snacks can be easy, delicious and fun

I’ve always been a health conscious person, and so, when I became a parent it made sense to raise my children this way. Well, sometimes the way you envision things isn’t always the way they translate in real life.

You see, my husband loves things like chips, beer and M&M’s — and when you have a busy household with two little kids, it’s easy to let bad habits slip in.

I’m not saying there isn’t a place for Oreos and MacDonalds in your life. I’m just saying, I believe in the 80/20 rule and if you can enjoy a healthy diet most of the time, then you will feel better about yourself, have more energy, be able to manage your weight, stabilize gut health and reduce your chance of things like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and weight gain.

Alright, enough blabbing — let’s get to it. Here’s why you should do the Healthy Snacks Challenge with me:

  • Health — by eating a diet rich in whole foods and natural ingredients, and low in white sugar and flours, you will feel better, look better and reduce your chances of illness. This is especially important for kids who can get caught up in the highs and lows from sugar rushes, and for building healthy eating habits from a young age.

  • Education — by doing the challenge, you will learn so much about food, healthy alternatives, healthy and delicious recipes, a farm/market-to-table lifestyle and a way to enrich your life through making your own food.

  • Money — by eating healthy natural food, and buying pantry foods in bulk, you will save money compared to eating highly processed foods in boxes.

  • Waste — by making your own food, you will reduce waste from boxed and packaged foods from the grocery store.

  • Community — by buying harvest from nearby farms and farmer’s markets, you will support your local farmers.

  • Enjoyment — by making food that is from whole food sources and natural sweeteners, you will notice a huge difference in the taste and learn to enjoy food exactly how it was meant. Plus, when you make your own healthy snacks, you appreciate it that much more.

  • Convenience — when you fill your pantry with the right healthy ingredients, it becomes easy to make something instead of heading out to the grocery store to pick up prepared food.

DYK? When you start eating snacks with real and natural ingredients, your cravings start to change. It’s true!
