Farm Visit

We LOVE going to our local family farm, especially in the Fall. It gives you all those warm and fuzzy Fall feelings. You get to enjoy the best of the season and there is so much for the whole family to do.

When I was growing up, trips to the family farm were fairly basic. You showed up, looked at the animals, picked up some of the farm’s harvest and then headed home.

But nowadays, family farms are more like a theme park with all sorts of fun attractions and you can spend the entire day having fun.

We recently visited Saunders Farm in Ottawa, Ontario and it is one of the best family farms we’ve been do. It is a destination trip for sure, and it is worth travelling to from all over.

Top five reasons to visit your local family farm this weekend:

  1. Fresh Air + Nature — like many family farms, Saunders Farm is out in the country and nestled in the forest. As you walk through the farm on the many trails, there are beautiful tress, colourful leaves and fresh country air all around for you to take in. This is a natural remedy in itself!

  2. Farm Activities — the family farm has become a destination because there is so much to do. Saunders Farm has a wagon ride, haunted house, theatre stage, puppet show, face painting, corn maze, trampolines, performers, zip line, playgrounds, games, bakery, cider house and food trucks.

  3. Homemade Food — when you head out to the family farm, plan to eat there because the food is so incredibly delicious and homemade. At Saunders Farm, we enjoyed hot chocolate, hot apple cider, homemade apple cinnamon donuts (the best), chocolate chips cookies and poutine from one of their many food trucks (the real deal).

  4. Pictures — as a great hidden secret (and maybe this isn’t hidden anymore), family farms are the best for taking your family photos at. The scenery is beautiful — think: nature, trees, corn stalks, pumpkins, sunflowers, the list goes on. At Saunders Farm, they have gone above and beyond in this department by making their own photo backdrops throughout the farm for you to take pictures. The best!

  5. Souvenirs — of course, you can never leave empty handed. The best part of the farm is that your souvenirs will always be good for you! We left Saunders Farm with a large jug of homemade apple cider and pumpkins! They even had an artisan market with all sorts of fun things to buy.

What’s your favourite thing to do at the farm? I’d love to know. Tell me below.
