DIY Photos

Taking beautiful photos at home a lot easier than you’d think, and it’s cost-friendly. You just need to follow a few key steps and make sure you invest in the right equipment. Visit my Amazon Storefront to see my entire DIY photography at home collection.

Equipment:

  1. Phone Camera - I have a professional DSLR Camera, and I never use it. I mean, I should. But I find the camera on my iPhone works beautifully, and it’s handy.

  2. Ring Light - use this one, which is on sale right now from my Amazon Store. This was the best investment I’ve made. I use it for everything (people, food, rooms, as a fill light) and it takes your photos to the next level. It includes a tripod and remote clicker. Every household needs one.

  3. Backdrop - I have a very simple backdrop stand which you can buy here and I use it all the time. I like a very simple curtain like this one, but you can use any curtain (even ones from Ikea) to add the look you want.

  4. Adobe Lightroom - this is a photo editing software for your phone and/or computer, and you can subscribe to this from Adobe. It’s cost-friendly, easy to use and takes your photos to the next level.

Steps:

  1. Concept - decide on the idea behind the photoshoot. Maybe it’s staged or candid, maybe its a birthday party or for a website. Nail this down.

  2. Subject - what is the focus of the photo? A person, object, scene, landscape. Everything will revolve around the subject.

  3. Setting - take control of the setting and backdrop. Maybe it’s natural, like by the lake, or maybe you’ve created it by using a backdrop. Either way, you want this to be as clean as possible.

  4. Lighting - be careful with lighting. If it’s an inside shoot, you will want to use as much natural light as you can and add a fill light where there are shadows. A light ring is great for people. If it is outside, make sure you shoot during a time of day that gives soft lighting. The golden hour is always beautiful (sunrise and sunset).

  5. Wardrobe + Props - if you are shooting people, make sure they are wearing clothes that work with the setting. Doing hair + make-up is always a good idea. For props, adding anything that makes sense (and doesn’t add clutter) is always fun.

I love taking photos at home because it’s cost-friendly, you can maintain creative control and there is never any pressure. You’re in charge!

The more you do it, the better you get!
