Chalk Art

One of the things I am always trying to promote in our house is art. I am huge supporter of and believer in the arts. I think it makes an incredible outlet for children, especially if you are someone with BIG EMOTIONS.

The way I do this in my house is by having an art space (cupboard, shelf and table) that my kids can use at all times. The trick is if they can SEE it they will want to DO it. And, I always try to stock it with fun and easy to use things, like CHALK.

One day last week, Chet grabbed the CHALK and said - can we decorate the driveway? I was like YEAH! And away we all went! Fun for days, and the best part was the rain washed it away which meant no clean-up.

This got me to thinking of all the ways you can use CHALK at home with your family, so I pulled together this list and thought I would share.

Six fun ways to use chalk at home with your family:

  1. Sidewalk Chalk - when you keep chalk handy, kids are more likely to grab it and use it. With sidewalk or driveway chalk, you can create all sorts of fun things like murals, pictures, planets, hopscotch, the list goes on. The best part is the rain washes it away!

  2. Canvas Chalk - chalk is underrated when it comes to doodling, stencilling, calligraphy and colouring. You can use paper, constructions paper, cardboard and even canvas. If you want to get fancy, try writing names or words on black card stock. This is great for table name cards!

  3. Chalkboard Paint - we have a few chalkboards in our house that the kids love to use. In our playroom, we painted an entire wall with chalkboard paint and we have a chalkboard sandwich sign that my dad made. All you have to do is go to Lowe’s or Home Depot, pick up the paint, chalk and get chalking! The chalk comes off easily with water and cloth.

  4. Chalk Bombs - I came across this idea and thought, I have to try this! A chalk bomb is like a water balloon but you add colour to it, so when it hits the driveway beautiful colours splash out, giving you a cool design. Steps: make the colour mixture (1/2 cup cornstarch, 2 cup water, food colouring), then fill the balloon with it (use a water ballon pump).

  5. Chalk Paint - if you were wondering what to do with all your broken chalk ends, this is it. Make chalk paint! And then have fun painting the driveway, sidewalk, cardboard, canvas or card stock. Steps: mix 2 tbsps of cornstarch, 2 tbsps of water and 1/2 tbsp of chalk.

  6. Ice Chalk - this is fun for little ones or on those really hot days. Take your chalk paint (instructions above) and then fill a popsicle mold, ice cube mold or any fun mold your kids would enjoy. Then, freeze. Your kids will love using them outside and watch the colours melt on those hot summer days.

Would you try one of these? I’d love to know! Tell me in the comments below.
