Healthy Snacks

As a mom, totally obsessed with eating fresh, local + healthy food — it can sometimes feel like an uphill battle when you have picky eaters at home.

But as long as I am doing one thing everyday to help them learn about food, food sources, healthy eating and their bodies, then I feel like I’m one step ahead.

Childhood is the best time to learn the healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Healthy eating can help your child feel good, stay at or reach a healthy weight, and have lots of energy for school and play. In fact, healthy eating can help your whole family live better — healthlinkbc.ca

Developing healthy eating habits from early on is so incredibly important, so here’s what I’m trying to do at home everyday:

  1. Talk About Food — in our house no food is off limit, but we do try to understand what is good for us and why. We talk about the different food groups, what our bodies need, why some foods are better than others, and why it’s important to eat healthy — especially for kids.

  2. Learn About Food Sources — we don’t just talk about where food comes from, we actually go there to see for ourselves. We like to visit places like farms to see the actual fruits or veggies hanging in the trees or popping up from the field. We will then buy the food, and have a greater appreciation for it when we know what goes into it to taking care of it.

  3. Practice Healthy Eating — we try to learn about all the different kinds of food, and what makes something healthy for us — and then we try to practice eating this way. We like to follow the 80 / 20 rule, and a great day always starts with a great breakfast with healthy fat and protein.

  4. Learn About Our Bodies — we learn that we need the different food groups so they can perform different functions in our body, like water to flush, fibre to poop, veggies and fruit for healthy nutrients and bacteria, and protein to build strong muscles. If we don’t like something or are full, we put it aside for someone else or for later.

  5. Commit To 30-Day Healthy Snack Challenge — we committed to 30 days of healthy snacks by making them at home, and boy did it make a difference!
