Healthy Apple Baking

We just came back from Chudleigh’s apple farm, and boy was it a hit with the entire family. There’s so much to do. Our favourite part was bringing home a bushel of apples to bake with — and discover all the ways you can enjoy healthy apple baking at home with your family.

THE APPLE EXPERIENCE

First-off, if you have never been apple picking, you must put this on your list for your family to try. Apple picking is a great activity to do in the Fall, and you can bring home all the harvest you want for healthy apple baking.

If you are too busy to go apple picking, you can always pick up a bushel of apples at your local farmer’s market, stand or grocery store. Bring your family with you, so they can be part of healthy apple baking from beginning to end.

You may want to pick up an apple peeler and corer, but that’s not necessary. I did all my apple peeling and chopping the old fashioned way — with a knife.

ABOUT APPLES

Did you know? There are over 7,500 apple varieties worldwide. That’s a lot of different types of apples. The next time you are at the grocery store, count all the varieties you can find — you will be astonished.

Apple season runs from July to November, which makes late Summer and Fall a perfect time for apple picking and healthy apple baking.

10 WAYS TO ENJOY HEALTHY APPLE BAKING WITH YOUR FAMILY

  1. Off the Core — there’s no better way to enjoy an apple than straight off the core. I think the way an apple was made even speaks to it. Throw it in your bag, and enjoy it anywhere — even on the go.

  2. Overnight Oats — one of our all-time favourite ways to eat apples is first thing in the morning — chopped and sprinkled on oats with walnuts. Yum!

  3. Drizzled in Peanut Butter — this is the perfect morning or afternoon snack. Simply take your apple, slice it and drizzle nut butter over it — my favourite is classic peanut butter.

  4. Apple Cinnamon Donuts — these are heavenly and, especially compared to store-bought donuts, good for you. Add a little white frosting or cinnamon sugar, and you have the treat of dreams. Recipe below.

  5. Warm Cinnamon Apples — this is so easy to make, and takes seconds. Dice up your apples (1-2), put a pan on the stove on medium heat, add a little butter (1-2 TBSP), add your apples, sauté for about 5 to 10 minutes, and toss in your cinnamon (1-2 tsp). Serve in a bowl on its own or with vanilla icea cream.

  6. Homemade Apple Sauce — this might be my all-time favourite way to eat apples, probably because I loved it as a kid. You can serve it with ice cream, whipped cream, on it’s own, or with anything you really want. Recipe below.

  7. Baked Apples — slice your apples in half, core them, brush melted butter on them with a little bit of cinnamon and brown sugar. Then put them in the over and bake at 350 degree for about 20-30 minutes. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  8. Apple Pie — I’m still trying to make the perfect apple pie (stay tuned), but there are still so many ways to do it — old fashioned is my favourite.

  9. Hot Apple Cider when you go apple picking (or to the store), make sure to pick up a jug of local apple cider. Bring it home, heat it up and enjoy it as an afternoon treat. So good!

  10. Caramel Apples — we made homemade date caramel sauce. With only five ingredients, it was easy to make, healty and so delicious. Slice up your apple, and serve with the dip on a snack board for people to enjoy.
