DIY Kids Photography

Although I love professional photography, it can get expensive and complicated when it comes to kids. Kids are not the easiest to photograph and you have to factor in things like naps, moods, likes/dislikes, snacks, colds, school, daycare – the list goes on.

For me, I’d rather just take their photograph at home. I enjoy the process and truly believe you can capture a great shot with your iPhone and home set up.

Here are a few of my favourite tips for DIY photography at home:

  1. Dress to impress – put your children in that special outfit that looks adorable

  2. Use a clean background – you can use nature, a plain wall, or even a sheet taped to the wall but make it simple and complimentary to the subject (your kids)

  3. Use props – a simple object that adds a pop of colour or interest to the photo can keep your kids focused while making it fun

  4. Work with natural light – lighting is everything and you want to make sure it casts a soft glow on your subjects

  5. Time it right – pick a time when you know your kids are at their best, it makes a huge difference and tons of fun

  6. Get a helper – ask a friend or family member to help with the process, a good helper can go a long way when it come to photographing kids
