Colour Your World

One of the best ways to get kids excited about art is through exploration.

You don’t have to be strict with rules or structure – all you have to do is let them play and explore.

In our house, we have a shelf filled with fun and colourful mediums they can play with anytime and a cupboard filled with materials.

They’re visible to the eye and easy to access, so they can just help themselves whenever they want.

A simple thing to do is let them pick one they like (so it doesn’t make a total mess) and tape a piece of paper to a table (put tape on each corner) and then let them go wild.

Here are a few of my favourite mediums to add to your shelf that are full of fun and colour:

  • Chalk – so handy to have for sidewalks, driveways, chalkboard walls and even on canvas or paper – IKEA or the dollar store is a great place to find different colours

  • Crayon – a staple in any family home for colouring anything on paper, but here’s something fun to do with your kids – go to Staples and create a Crayola box of your own filled with your favourite colours

  • Markers – be careful with markers as they can be tough to get out with little ones, but you can get all different colours and brands perfect for drawing, colouring, decorating, calligraphy and more

  • Pastels – my all time favourite since I was a kid are pastels, I think it’s a texture and vibrancy thing and you can really have fun with them when you use your fingers to blend colours

  • Acrylic – a staple with painting and known for being durable, colourful and flexible since you can paint almost anything with it and the colours stay strong – try canvas, paper, cardboard, paper-mache

  • Watercolour – the prettiest and gentlest of paints, perfect for illustrations or decorating on paper or canvas and one of the easiest paints for little ones
